Let Us Not Confuse Zero With The Stillness Of Electrons
CENTER ON CONTEMPORARY ART (COCA)
June-July, 2021
Curated by Negarra A. Kudumu
“In this exhibition, Meghan Elizabeth Trainor continues her long standing activist investigations into the language and ideology of computer science. Trainor’s logic gates act as visual and tactile tools for demystifying the realm of computer science, a discipline with origins that reside not with those who control the industry, but within knowledge systems indigenous to ancient times and geographies that would be considered Otherworldly. Trainor offers a far reaching re-evaluation of the roots of computer science and the possibilities for a more holistic engagement with it.”

At the Center on Contemporary Art, Meghan Elizabeth Trainor also marries the digital with the ancient in Let us not confuse zero with the stillness of electrons (through Aug. 21), in which she traces the origins of computer science back to ancient, predigital knowledge systems, drawing on connections between electrical circuits and the protective circles of witch- and spell-craft. Trainor’s tender encaustic paintings and assemblages of beeswax, copper wire, and electronics on panel can be esoteric but have an immediate, visceral quality that can be understood by the uninitiated.
